I have a surprise birthday party to attend in a couple weeks and I'm in need of help with the costume/theme part. It is a Kentucky Derby theme. Now I have been to a horse race once and it was in San Diego, so nothing near the real dressing up that happens in other parts of the country.
So, for those of you who have been or just know what would be perfect, please help!!
I know I'm thinking possibly a big hat, but help me out :)
What do you think of any of the outfits or hats in this post?

You just need a summery dress and a hat. Can't go wrong with that. The only thing is this it's not the best time of the year to find hats like that and they can be expensive-see if you can raid someone's closest haha! The more wild, the more fun!
You could easily make a fantastic hat if you can find the main part of it at thrift or resale. Then add big netting and flowers...it would look great! Remember...the Derby would be spring colors!
i have always LOVED j simps kentucky derby outfit. i say wear something flowery or bright since we've been in winter and wearing more neutral tones. and def go for the big hat. i got a HUGE one from forever 21 for cheap, cheap! check out their website - they may have some for the spring coming out! :)
Big hat, poofy dress and heels. That's all you need. Helps if the dress is summery because well that's when the derby kinda is :)
Oh def a big hat and heels! The hate is the major accessory! I Love Kendra's outfit...or maybe its just the color of her dress in that picture that I love. Def bright/summer colors! :)
Definitely a summer dress and a big hat. A lot of people make their own hats. Forever 21 has some cute floppy straw hats right now that you can embellish a bit. Good luck!
we have the Carolina Cup every March in SC. I've been about 5 times and only seen horses like once. Too busy getting drunk.
Wear your best summer dress, something flowy and fun, and buy the biggest (pref. pink) hat you can find!
We have Steeplechase every May here in Nashville and you can't go wrong with a spring/summer dress (bonus points for Lilly Pulitzer) and a big hat! Have so much fun!
Oh I am so jealous...I have always wanted to go just to wear an amazing hat! But I love the classic look of Ashley Simpson's outfit, her hat is just too small though. Definitely wear a big hat!

I LOVE Kentucky Derby outfits! It's one of my life goals to go someday and wear a great dress with an amazing hat. If I were you, I'd rock the big hat with a cute summery dress. I can't wait to see what you come up with :-)
Not sure if this comment is too late for the party or not! When I went to the KY Derby, I found a plain sun hat (from Charlotte Russe) and I bought feathers and a big pink rose (from Hobby Lobby) to attach to it. A picture of my hat is on my blog header. Macys and Dillards usually sell hats. At least in KY. Just a cute summery sun dress would be fun! Hope this helps at least a little bit!
Hi, Maria. I'm DEFINITELY late to this well-heeled party, but I simply love Ashleigh (sp?) Simpson and Pete Wentz' outfit. It's classy, retro, and atypical from the big hat brigade.
